Synopsis

Tai-Pan is the second book in James Clavell's Asian Saga, set in 19th-century Hong Kong during the height of the opium trade and British expansion into China. The novel centers on the fierce rivalry between Dirk Struan, the formidable patriarch of the Struan trading house, and his former shipmate Tyler Brock, the ruthless head of the rival Brock firm. Their decades-long feud, fueled by past betrayals and the cutthroat world of opium and tea merchants, drives the plot forward as both men fight for dominance in the burgeoning port. Clavell weaves a sprawling multi-generational narrative that includes the rise of Dirk's son Culum and the enduring legacy of the Struan family, all while depicting the brutal realities of the opium trade and the complexities of colonial Hong Kong. Rich in period detail and atmospheric prose, Tai-Pan is a sweeping epic of ambition, betrayal, and the enduring bonds of rivalry and friendship.
