Survivors follows several groups of Americans navigating the aftermath of a total socioeconomic collapse, as currency becomes worthless, infrastructure fails, and predatory gangs fill the vacuum left by government authority. James Wesley Rawles, writing from a survivalist "prepper" perspective, focuses heavily on the practical mechanics of surviving such a breakdown — self-defense, bartering, community-building, and resource management.

A prequel to Rawles's earlier novel Patriots, the book is aimed as much at illustrating preparedness principles as it is at telling a continuous story.
