Synopsis

Tender Branson is, as far as the world knows, the last living member of the Creedish Death Cult—a doomsday sect whose followers, raised as indentured servants for the outside world, have all killed themselves. Alone on a hijacked jumbo jet with the fuel running out, Tender dictates the story of his life into the black box, counting down to the crash he has arranged.

He recounts how a manipulative team of agents and publicists reinvented the last survivor as a media messiah: a bestselling prophet with a ghostwritten scripture, a diet plan, and a talent for telling desperate strangers exactly what they want to hear. Guided by a mysterious woman named Fertility Hollis, who claims to see the future, Tender tries to untangle who is really pulling the strings.

Told in reverse—its pages and chapters numbered backward toward zero—Survivor is Chuck Palahniuk's ferocious satire of celebrity, religion, and the self-help industry, narrated by a man racing his own manufactured legend to the ground.
