Synopsis

A collection of humorous sketches set in the fictional town of Mariposa, Ontario, where the narrator's absurdly elevated view of trivial local events and the eccentricities of the townspeople — the barber, the undertaker, the banker, the doctor — create a comic portrait of small-town life. The stories satirize the self-importance of rural institutions and the quirks of the people who run them, all with a warm, nostalgic undercurrent.
