"I realize now that the only way to make that connection I seek is to take a woman and keep her until she submits. I’m prepared to wait. I won’t force her to love me. I haven’t found her yet. She won’t be a child. I’m not my father."
What started as a quirky, wholesome story about an anti-social girl trying to fit into the society quickly takes an extremely dark turn come Part II of the novel. It was almost like someone switched off the lights they spent all the time putting on in Part I. Some of the scenes were deeply unsettling primarily because I initially went in completely blind. This, Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead & Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine hit my radar more or less the same time & I was not expecting it to be this dark. But that is not to say I didn't love it.
"I was right to trust nobody. They all let me down in the end."
And the author burned it all down in Part III. I felt empty, like I did when I first watched I saw the devil. Ending wasn't even bittersweet, it was straight up acrid. Fetid, like a week old dead animal. You feel for Sally. You taste her hopelessness. You see her becoming the very thing she fought so hard not to & once again you're hit with the reality of world. Most of the time, there are no happy endings. And life is not a battle between bad & good but between bad & worse.
