This was an ok-read ! Very very average to be honest! The premise got me going - Chicago , Magic, Wizardary - but the first few chapters into the book , and I started getting annoyed.
The writing style is full of things I don't like :
1. The female characters lack depth - they are there just to whimper , cry , seduce , be helpless or angry ! No other role whatsoever. Good books have well rounded side characters - right from Book 1.
2. All characters lack depth , not just the female ones - Morgan , Marcone , Victor Sells -everyone. The book is all about Harry ! Harry this and Harry that. How he is always in imminent danger , the do-gooder in the face of adversity, always in mortal peril but somehow managing to save the world with sheer strength of will! If he is supposed to be the hero in every book , I can barely stand him. Almost reminded me of how every chapter in Goosebumps ended.
3. The magic is kind of irritating - i'm not expecting a Harry Potter kind of alternate universe- but the summoning of faerys , the Nevernever, the Council , his staff, his talisman, the training that he went through to become the wizard that he is, why did he kill someone in self defence , soulgazing , Third Eye ,the list goes on and on and on - all of this could have been worked on more. Made the reader get involved more. Just sheer disappointing.
4. His male chauvinist views. Urgh! I get it ,but it is annoying to read.
5. The attempt at humor - This just doesn't do it for me. Again - very RL Stine type of a thing.
I might have liked this book as a teen, but as an adult - nope ! Not my thing.
This might be intended for a certain category of audience and I don't fit the bill. Time to move on.
I will not read the second book , but might give the TV series a go .
