Synopsis

A middle-aged man the story calls only "Daddy" has lost almost everything: his job, his marriage, and his place in his family. With nowhere left to be, he sets out on an aimless road trip south, and the only one who comes with him is Happie, the loyal dog he raised from a puppy and who has never stopped loving him.

Told with great tenderness and quiet humor, the manga follows the pair as they drift across Japan, living simply and finding small moments of grace on the road. Happie narrates his devotion to a master the rest of the world has given up on, offering an animal's-eye view of loyalty, contentment, and the meaning of home.

Stargazing Dog, by Takashi Murakami, is a beloved Japanese graphic novel about the unconditional bond between a person and a dog. Gentle and unmistakably sad, it is a short, moving meditation on companionship and the dignity of ordinary lives.
