Spirit and Resistance
Theologian George Tinker explores American Indian culture, its rich religious and cultural heritage, and its complex relationship with historic Christianity, which colonized and converted it. He argues that any meaningful reflection must address the political state of Indian affairs and the aspirations for community well-being. Tinker critically examines contemporary Native American culture, offering correctives to both liberal and New Age appropriations of Native spiritual practices and liberation theology. He proposes novel ideas for cultural survival, identity, sustainability, and the health of Native Americans, drawing on Native insights into the Sacred Other and sacred space to reconfigure traditional religious concepts.
