Synopsis

Released from Kamiti Maximum Prison, the narrator of Son of Fate tries to build an honest life farming land left by his grandmother, but finds rural life unbearable and heads to the city instead. There, work dries up fast — he ends up sleeping on the streets, scraping by as a watchman, shoeshiner, and street vendor, repeatedly pulled back toward the criminal life he's trying to leave behind.

His fortunes shift unexpectedly when he saves a wealthy businessman from a python attack, opening a narrow path toward redemption. John Kiriamiti's sequel to his celebrated autobiographical novel My Life in Crime continues his unflinching account of survival on the margins of Kenyan society.
