Something Blue
Something Blue is Emily Giffin's second novel, published by St. Martin's Press in 2005, and the companion to her bestselling debut Something Borrowed. It hands the narration to Darcy Rhone — the beautiful, self-absorbed friend readers spent the first book rooting against — and follows what happens after her carefully arranged life collapses.
Darcy has always been the high-school golden girl who never lost the gilt: the looks, the charisma, the enviable life. Then her best friend Rachel takes up with Dex, Darcy's fiancé, and Darcy discovers she is pregnant by one of the groomsmen. Unwilling to face the pity and gossip waiting for her at home, she decamps to London to stay with her childhood friend Ethan, expecting a glamorous reinvention on a new continent.
What she gets instead is a friend who refuses to indulge her, a loneliness she has never had to sit with, and a pregnancy she is entirely unprepared for. Something Blue is a redemption story: Giffin takes the antagonist of her first novel and, over the course of Darcy's year abroad, turns her into someone worth caring about — a novel about friendship, self-awareness, forgiveness and the difference between the life you wanted and the one that is actually yours.
