Synopsis

Rather than retelling D-Day through its generals, Giles Milton builds his account of the Normandy invasion from the ground up: the frogmen who cleared the beach obstacles, the resistance agents feeding intelligence to London, the American gangster-turned-soldier, and the ordinary infantrymen who actually stormed the beaches.

Drawing on diaries, interviews, and previously overlooked archives, the book reconstructs June 6, 1944 and its aftermath as a story of individual courage and improvisation rather than pure strategy — a mosaic of the people who made the invasion succeed.
