Synopsis

Barbara Crossette takes readers on a journey into the historical past and present of Bhutan, a place where the Buddhist world remains largely intact amidst the loss of other Himalayan kingdoms. She explores a landscape of frozen peaks and verdant valleys, where medieval existence once thrived, sustained by temples, monks, and lamas. However, this peaceful and harmonious world faces growing threats from outside influences, including smuggling, disease, and the impact of tourism.
