Synopsis

A queen awaits execution and tells her own version of a story readers think they know. In Neil Gaiman's Snow White retelling, the stepdaughter she raised is not the wronged princess of the fairy tale. The girl feeds on blood, her father's first and then the queen's own, and leaves scars behind as proof.

Colleen Doran adapted Gaiman's 1994 short story into this full-color graphic novel for Dark Horse Comics. She keeps his text as the queen's own confession while her art carries the horror. The familiar furniture is all still here: huntsmen, dwarfs, a glass coffin, a poisoned apple, rebuilt into something closer to horror than romance.

The telling is deliberate rather than fast, closer to testimony than chase. She never asks outright to be believed. It sits with dread more than shock, and it trusts the reader to weigh a narrator with her own reasons for shaping the tale this way.

Doran's pages earned the graphic novel a 2020 Eisner Award in the category for adaptations from another medium. It also took a Bram Stoker Award for the year's best graphic novel achievement. Both mark a widely anthologized short story remade as its own visual work.
