Synopsis

Ruth Jefferson is an experienced labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital. When a newborn baby dies under her watch after she is ordered not to touch him because of her race, she finds herself charged with negligent homicide. As the trial begins, Ruth and her white public defender must navigate a legal battle that forces everyone involved to confront their own deeply held beliefs about prejudice and privilege.

Jodi Picoult (born May 19, 1966, in Nesconset, New York) is an American novelist known for fiction that explores controversial social and ethical issues, including My Sister's Keeper, Nineteen Minutes, Small Great Things, and the more recent Mad Honey and By Any Other Name. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in English and holds a master's degree in education from Harvard University. She lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with her husband and their three children.
