Synopsis

The dragon that destroyed the city of the dark elves has alighted in Usara, and its plan is to incinerate the crown city. Before that, it finds Slayter and forces him into a game: an insidious choice designed to feed the dragon's appetite for suffering, and built so that only the dragon can win.

Slayter outwits it. The dragon does not take the loss well. It vows revenge and sets the prophesied conflict moving — giants waking in the land, the wheels of war beginning to turn.

Khyven, Lorelle, Rhenn and Vohn all stand ready to fight, but this is five mortals against a horde of godlike beings, and the fog of war is thicker than any of them can see through. The one thing that might cut through it is the most brilliant mind they have, which puts Slayter at the front. Whether he finds the answer in time is the question the book runs on.
