As she gets to know people who strongly oppose many of the ideas she famously champions, Hochschild nevertheless finds common ground and quickly warms to the people she meets--among them a Tea Party activist whose town has been swallowed by a sinkhole caused by a drilling accident--people whose concerns are actually ones that all Americans share: the desire for community, the embrace of family, and hopes for their children. Strangers in Their Own Land goes beyond the commonplace liberal idea that these are people who have been duped into voting against their own interests. Instead, Hochschild finds lives ripped apart by stagnant wages, a loss of home, an elusive American dream--and political choices and views that make sense in the context of their lives. Hochschild draws on her expert knowledge of the sociology of emotion to help us understand what it feels like to live in "red" America. You have to remember, he reminded me, that Harvard is older than the U.S. government. You have to remember because Harvard doesn't let you forget. 1969: the height of counterculture and the year universities would seek to curb the unruly spectacle of student protest; the winter that Harvard University would begin the tumultuous process of merging with Radcliffe, its all-female sister school; and the year that Jane Britton, an ambitious twenty-three-year-old graduate student in Harvard's Anthropology Department and daughter of Radcliffe Vice President J. Boyd Britton, would be found bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge, Massachusetts apartment. Forty years later, Becky Cooper a curious undergrad, will hear the first whispers of the story. In the first telling the body was nameless. The story was this: a Harvard student had had an affair with her professor, and the professor had murdered her in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology because she'd threatened to talk about the affair. Though the rumor proves false, the story that unfolds, one that Cooper will follow for ten years, is even more complex: a tale of gender inequality in academia, a 'cowboy culture' among empowered male elites, the silencing effect of institutions, and our compulsion to rewrite the stories of female victims. We Keep the Dead Close is a memoir of mirrors, misogyny, and murder. It is at once a rumination on the violence and oppression that rules our revered institutions, a ghost story reflecting one young woman's past onto another's present, and a love story for a girl who was lost to history.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx24ty6chtk2grbfg6kgrsxs.jpg?v=767733e173","LMJ5fvxa;mxGUbrr$RR*~qS#S1X8",2020,506,[218
"01kx24ty66bh7wcc4904r1v7a4","becky-cooper-t3yy","Becky Cooper",[223,227,228,232,233
104,"True Crime","true-crime
79,"Education","education
[
[162,237,101],"dark",[239],"mystery-box
"01kr0nd3ah00b24s1sreysveaa","a-strange-stirring-cbpw","Strange Stirring","In 1963, Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique sparked a national conversation, resonating deeply with countless women. For much of the fifteenth century, these two families were locked in battle for control of the British monarchy. Kings were murdered and deposed. Armies marched on London. Old noble names were ruined while rising dynasties seized power and lands. The war between the royal House of Lancaster and York, the longest and most complex in British history, profoundly altered the course of the monarchy. In The Wars of the Roses, Alison Weir reconstructs this conflict with the same dramatic flair and impeccable research that she brought to her highly praised The Princes in the Tower. The first battle erupted in 1455, but the roots of the conflict reached back to the dawn of the fifteenth century, when the corrupt, hedonistic Richard II was sadistically murdered, and Henry IV, the first Lancastrian king, seized England's throne. Both Henry IV and his son, the cold warrior Henry V, ruled England ably, if not always wisely--but Henry VI proved a disaster, both for his dynasty and his kingdom. Only nine months old when his father's sudden death made him king, Henry VI became a tormented and pathetic figure, weak, sexually inept, and prey to fits of insanity. The factional fighting that plagued his reign escalated into bloody war when Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, laid claim to the throne that was rightfully his--and backed up his claim with armed might. Alison Weir brings brilliantly to life both the war itself and the historic figures who fought it on the great stage of England. Here are the queens who changed history through their actions--the chic, unconventional Katherine of Valois, Henry V's queen; the ruthless, social-climbing Elizabeth Wydville; and, most crucially, Margaret of Anjou, a far tougher and more powerful character than her husband,, Henry VI, and a central figure in the Wars of the Roses. Here, too, are the nobles who carried the conflict down through the generations--the Beauforts, the bastard descendants of John of Gaunt, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, known to his contemporaries as "the Kingmaker"; and the Yorkist King, Edward IV, a ruthless charmer who pledged his life to cause the downfall of the House of Lancaster. The Wars of the Roses is history at its very best--swift and compelling, rich in character, pageantry, and drama, and vivid in its re-creation of an astonishing, dangerous, and often grim period of history. Alison Weir, one of the foremost authorities on the British royal family, demonstrates here that she is also one of the most dazzling stylists writing history today.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx6p3m7hmng26ppj19ckdfvd.jpg?v=154f472ef2","L7CGMj00Nw_M0L%#oLRPMx.7RPRQ",462,[471
"01kkc82xmb1x737y3wp2z7988z","alison-weir-lq4q","Alison Weir",[476,477
[
[162,237,101],[482],"multiple-povs
"01kx2kvtaejqr3p502ax1jh18s","the-lost-gospel-emn5","The lost gospel",""This is the first full account of the lost gospel of Jesus' original followers, revealing him to be a Jewish Socrates who was mythologized into the New Testament Christ. Compiled by his followers during his lifetime, the Book of Q (from Quelle, German for source) became the prime foundation for the New Testament gospels. Once lost, it has been reconstructed through a century of scholarship. In presenting his own translation, Burton Mack explains how the text of Q was determined and explores the implications of the discovery that Jesus was transformed into the dying and rising messianic savior of Christianity by the New Testament gospels." "Instead of telling a dramatic story about Jesus' life as the Christian gospels do, the Book of Q contained only his sayings. The first followers of Jesus focused not upon his life and destiny, but on the social experiment called for by his teachings. Their book collected his proverbs, aphorisms, and parables to offer instruction in living authentically in the midst of a most confusing time." "In The Lost Gospel, Burton Mack puts forth the first popular translation of Q as scholarly consensus has reconstructed it; shows that Jesus' life story as presented in the New Testament gospels was fictionalized for theological purposes; reveals Jesus to be a countercultural teacher and leader - subsequently mythologized into the Christ of the New Testament; depicts Jesus' followers not as Christians, but as disciples of a wise, antiestablishment teacher; they did not believe him to be the son of God, believe that he rose from the dead, or gather to worship in his name and concludes that Christianity is a mythologized religion (like Buddhism and other religions) rooted in a historical figure and teachings that in reality are quite remote from conventional beliefs."--Jacket.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx2kvtc4rvmkepgyx0e012m9.jpg?v=e8bca37700","LKI2[%~8R7I=tP-TxDafEgnjNday",1993,275,[493
"01kx2kvtav2fh4xjp3f7kx2pf6","burton-l-mack-ndbt","Burton L. Even the male Y chromosome is said to be at risk of disappearing altogether one day.

Packed with startling statistics, informed by pop culture, and narrated in the entertaining style for which Guy Garcia is known, The Decline of Men sheds light on a problem that has wreaked havoc on the American family and urges men and women to look past the gender wars to address this national emergency together.
"01kvket9yrysqkfg9m6ar5a6vs","guy-garcia-x9jk","Guy Garcia",[647,648,649
96,"Psychology","psychology",[654,659
"01kvkewwkfjgd71d7q177k1eja","the-decline-of-men-how-the-american-male-is-tuning-out-giving-up-and-flipping-the-cradle-4y0c","The Decline of Men: How the American Male Is Tuning Out, Giving Up, and Flipping the Cradle","1.00
"01kvkf2w6as4695zc9gmgsf2t5","the-decline-of-men-how-the-american-male-is-tuning-out-giving-up-and-flipping-the-bird-to-his-own-future-lnm3","The Decline of Men: How the American Male Is Tuning Out, Giving Up, and Flipping the Bird to His Own Future
[62,101],[
"01kqrba2000z9y2j002ht06wqy","que-quieren-las-mujeres-nbdf","¿Qué quieren las mujeres?","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kqrba220mmj6f4wv382hrfch.jpg","L2Pd@l^600|co~$O*z#S-VK40zE#",2013,232,[675,679
"01kqrba21xqct6g6135gz2ydxd","daniel-bergner-coa3","Daniel Bergner
"01kq5t62pwry93w2k3aratt59a","julia-alquezar-wzi4","Julia Alquézar",[684,688,689,690
72,"Self-Help & Psychology","self-help-psychology
[
[101,62],[
[697
[699,700,701,702
[
[62,63],[
"genre
711,738,760,792,811,843
"01kx6n52xnafw279ps2t0g9wv7","phone-and-spear-a-yuta-anthropology-lxp5","Phone and Spear - a Yuta Anthropology","Yuta is the Yolngu word for new. Phone & Spear: A Yuta Anthropology is a project inspired by the gloriously cheeky and deeply meaningful audiovisual media made with and circulated by mobile phones by an extended Aboriginal family in northern Australia. Building on a ten-year collaboration by the community-based arts collective Miyarrka Media, the project is an experiment in the anthropology of co-creation. It is a multivoiced portrait of an Indigenous society using mobile phones inventively to affirm connections to kin and country amid the difficult and often devastating circumstances of contemporary remote Aboriginal life. But this is not simply a book about Aboriginal art, mobile phones, and social renewal. If old anthropology understood its task as revealing one world to another, yuta anthropology is concerned with bringing different worlds into relationship. Following Yolngu social aesthetics or what Miyarrka Media translate as "the law of feeling" the book is a relational technology in its own right: an object that combines color, pattern, and story to bring once distant worlds into new sensuously mediated connections.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/works/01/01kx6n52xnafw279ps2t0g9wv7.jpg?v=c53f52ef39","L9JkZYpI00pIo#kQs+xt00Io~WW-",272,[720,724,728
"01kx6n52xy9zc6g3jtqez4cxcv","miyarrka-media-vyqr","Miyarrka Media
"01kr0sfvc87yyy6m5t6zcg7qb2","jennifer-deger-8ukg","Jennifer Deger
"01kx6n52y0cmcvwgtw1b3mg2wn","paul-gurrumuruw-wunumurra-yp0f","Paul Gurrumuruw Wunu?murra",[733
[
[101,447],[
"01kx23z03dzj3e7ja6t8fa2b9v","not-my-type-one-woman-vs-a-president-6q6d","Not My Type One Woman Vs. a President","AN INSTANT INDIE, USA TODAY, AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! "Delightful . . . But what about E. Jean’s side of the story? What about the flight suits, the bottle of green Chartreuse, and the bob? Not My Type puts you in a better seat than the jury box. You will hear Alina Habba, Esq., “Trump’s most beautiful attorney,” asking E. Jean to “list” the people she has “slept with”—a list which turns out to be so marvelous, it is worth twice the price of this book. You will experience the fear and loathing of E. Jean’s “psychiatric evaluations,” and hear how she tries to cheer up Trump’s gloomy, $750-an-hour shrink by telling him about the strange white tablet Hunter S. Thompson gave her. You will be in on the choosing of the “clothes for court,” and the creation of “the look”: a look that will help the jury connect the younger E. Jean who is attacked by Trump in Bergdorf’s with the older E. Jean who sits in the courtroom.
