This book was so weird, so unhinged and also deeply heartfelt!! What I appreciated most is that it explores loneliness, intimacy, friendship, desire, alienation, and the weirdness of trying to connect with other people without constantly screaming at me that the airplanes are a metaphor for something. Maybe they are to other readers! I’m sure there are approximately seventeen essays that could be written about what the planes represent. But I personally didn’t need to reduce Linda’s attraction to some neat symbolic explanation. I was perfectly happy to accept that this is simply this woman’s extremely bizarre reality and see what happens when she tries to navigate the world with it. it takes something completely ridiculous and treats its protagonist with enough sincerity that the ridiculousness never cancels out the humanity underneath it. This is exactly the kind of literary weirdness I love!!!
