She and Allan
She and Allan (1921) is H. Rider Haggard's crossover adventure novel uniting his two most famous creations — the hunter and adventurer Allan Quatermain and the immortal white sorceress Ayesha, "She-who-must-be-obeyed." Grieving and searching for a way to speak with his dead, Quatermain travels to the Zulu witch-doctor Zikali, who directs him north to the legendary ruler of the lost city of Kôr, giving him a protective talisman for the road.
Accompanied by the formidable Zulu warrior Umslopogaas, Quatermain's expedition reaches the remote settlement of Strathmuir, where cannibal raiders from a rebel sect kill much of the community and abduct Inez Robertson, daughter of the settlement's ruined former sea captain. Robertson's search for his daughter draws Quatermain into the conflict between Ayesha and Rezu, the immortal chief of the rebel Amahagger, who intends to marry Inez and seize Ayesha's throne.
Hired to lead Ayesha's forces against Rezu, Quatermain finds himself caught between war, supernatural power, and Ayesha's own promise to finally answer his questions about death and the world beyond — a story that also serves as a prequel to events referenced in Haggard's earlier Ayesha novels.
