There are signs of a struggle in the living room, and as the hours pass with no word, the police and a ravenous national media begin to circle. Nick, evasive and strangely composed under the cameras, quickly becomes the prime suspect in his wife's disappearance.

Gillian Flynn tells the story in two alternating voices. Nick narrates the investigation from the present as suspicion tightens around him, while Amy's diary traces the couple's courtship and the slow souring of their marriage. The two accounts refuse to line up, and the widening gap between them keeps the reader guessing about who is lying, who is telling the truth, and what really happened on the anniversary.

Beneath the missing-person case, Gone Girl is a caustic anatomy of a modern marriage and the performances it demands. Flynn dissects the roles spouses play for each other and for the outside world, the machinery of a media spectacle, and the resentments that accumulate when two clever, image-conscious people stop being honest with each other. Sharp, cynical, and ruthlessly plotted around a pair of unreliable narrators, it became one of the defining psychological thrillers of its era.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01ktkx3dk6k3s6syphedc5mc2x.jpg?v=2f60cfe167","L35;,O~p%#-:MxIUM{Rj029GMxIV",2012,"4.02",16,486,[217
"01kjq7te064746m1ayvtbsbyh4","gillian-flynn-liux","Gillian Flynn",[222,226,227,228,232,233
44,"Crime","crime
40,"Suspense","suspense
[
[119,70],[122,238],"dual-timeline","On their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne's wife, Amy, vanishes, leaving behind a trail of clues that suggest a struggle. Millie’s employer, Nina Winchester, is erratic and increasingly cruel, leaving impossible demands and cleaning up messes that make no sense, while Nina’s charming husband, Andrew, treats Millie with a warmth that feels like a lifeline. As Millie tries to keep her head down and her past hidden, she realizes the household’s polished surface conceals something far more dangerous, and that the question of who holds the power here is not as settled as it looks. Loosened by cocktails and a wound he can't stop pressing, Ted admits that his wife is cheating on him — and that, some nights, he thinks he could kill her for it. To his surprise, Lily doesn't flinch. She calmly agrees that some people simply deserve to die, and offers to help him do it.

What starts as an abstract game between two strangers becomes a meticulous plan, and then something far more dangerous. Because Lily is not a bored socialite indulging a fantasy. She’s hired by Douglas Garrick, a soft-spoken tech executive, to keep the home and quietly look after his wife, Wendy, who is said to be unwell and rarely leaves a locked bedroom. But Millie soon glimpses bruises and other signs that something is badly wrong behind that door, and the instinct that has always gotten her into trouble — to protect a woman she believes is being hurt — takes hold. As she edges closer to intervening, she learns the situation is nothing like the rescue she imagined, and that the people in this household are each playing a longer game than she can see. But the polished surface cracks quickly. Millie senses she’s being watched, and the more she learns about the people next door, the clearer it becomes that her new neighbors are hiding secrets as dark as anything in her own past. At the end of The Undertaker’s Daughter, Dr. Rowan Dupont is reeling from a tragedy that struck close to home. She began questioning her abilities as a criminal psychiatrist for the Metro Special Crime Unit. She returned home to Winchester to take over the operations of the funeral home, which has been in her family for over a hundred years. This change was to help her gain perspective in relation to the recent tragedy and also to obtain answers regarding her tragic past. However, she would find herself embroiled in not one but two murder investigations and as a result danger stalked her at every turn. Do these events have any connection to the serial killer stalking her or were they separate?

The Secrets We Bury had a lot, going on. I can’t go into much details without giving away spoilers, but one thing was certain the story was gripping, intense and suspenseful. The events in this installment had Rowan questioning if the tragic events from her past happened the way she believed it did or was there something more sinister involved.

The author provided readers with additional details into the life and the mind of the serial killer. His obsession with Rowan went deeper than one could imagine. The introduction of new characters helped to stir things up and made for some interesting moments. The story moved at a solid pace and there was never a dull moment. The author tied up the main thread for this installment, but the author left the overall arc for the series hanging as the serial killer is still on the loose.

Conclusion/Recommendation.
Readers who enjoy psychological suspense and fans of Debra Webb may want to grab a copy of The Secrets We Bury.","none","rv-01kxpx8h2z6z3nzcvb831gtjdk",[]]
