Synopsis

Sapiens: A Graphic History, Volume 1: The Birth of Humankind is the opening instalment of the full-colour graphic adaptation of Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens, co-written with David Vandermeulen and illustrated by Daniel Casanave.

It traces the earliest stretch of the human story: how Homo sapiens came to dominate the other human species, how they spread out of Africa to every corner of the planet, and the ecological damage they left in their wake over roughly 70,000 years.

Rather than retell the book straight, the adaptation keeps changing register. Human evolution is staged as a reality television show, the meeting between Sapiens and Neanderthals is worked through as modern art, and the disappearance of the world's megafauna is played as a detective film. Gay Neanderthals, historical serial killers and Steve Jobs all turn up along the way.

Written for adults and older teenagers, it can be read on its own or as the start of the four-volume sequence.
