Synopsis

Sanctorum Communio is Dietrich Bonhoeffer's doctoral dissertation, completed in 1927, in which he engages social philosophy and sociology to construct a theology of the church as a genuine human community bound together in Christ. This English edition restores material cut from the original 1930 German publication.

Though academic in form, the book lays the theological groundwork for Bonhoeffer's later life: his commitment to the Confessing Church, his ecumenical work, and ultimately his participation in the resistance against the Nazi regime.
