So before I ramble, let me get this out of the way, this was the finest King novel I have ever read. This was terror wrapped in fright through and through. Absolutely 0 fat and grade A fillet mignon from page 1.
It was unique in a way that it made efforts on multiple fronts to get you buzzed on fear as soon as possible. It wasn't whiskey+ice or whiskey+water, King went full Baba Yaga & mixed some very potent elements in this concoction.
We had a motley group of a writer, who was open to possibilities. A kid, who always believed in the supernatural. A doctor who needed proof. An academic who put it all together. A priest who was tired of the concept of evil in this new world. And a woman, who was a sceptic till her very last moment.
While the concept of vampires left me more curious than scared in the past, here I found my skin breaking into gooseflesh on more occasions than 1.
Matt Burke found the town's groundskeeper in a tavern and invited him into his house for a decent night's sleep after seeing the haggard state he was in, only to hear window tapping sounds coming from the guest room late at night, a soft Yes, come in , followed by a demonic cackle and sucking sounds.
The way this scene unravelled was nothing short of genius by the way. We see an old man hitting a wall, an academic coming to a realisation that everything he'd ever believed in was nothing but utter b•••••••. This, mixed with supernatural rendered him (and me) catatonic.
And Susan, who refused to believe this children's fairy tale, believed all the same, for there's nothing much to do when you're entrapped in a cellar and a Vampire's red, gleaming eyes are staring you down into submission.
Only the believers lived to fight another day.
Oh how I wish this was a trilogy or at least a duology. Because let's face it, the prologue was basically a thirst trap. In hindsight, it tantalizes you with another return to the 'Salem's Lot. Another book. God it would have been beautiful. But oh well 🤷🏻♂️ A book leaving you wanting more is a good book in and of itself.
