The Safe Place

The Safe Place is Anna Downes's debut, a standalone psychological suspense novel. Emily Proudman is failing at acting in London and has just lost her job when her former boss, the polished and powerful Scott Denny, makes her an unexpected offer: come and work at his family's estate on the French coast, all expenses paid, no questions asked.

The property is beautiful and completely cut off. Scott's wife Nina and their young daughter Aurelia live there in near-total isolation, and Emily gradually understands that the household runs on rules nobody explains and a version of events that does not hold. What looked like rescue turns out to be containment.

Downes builds the book on atmosphere and slow disclosure, alternating perspectives to show the same household from inside and outside, and letting the reader see the shape of the danger before Emily does.
