Synopsis

Resistance and Contemplation: The Way of Liberation is a work of theology and nonviolent political philosophy by Jim Douglass, first published in 1972. Subtitled "The Yin and Yang of the Non-Violent Life," it explores the relationship between contemplative spirituality and active political resistance, drawing on the thought and example of Jesus, Thomas Merton, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Douglass argues that authentic nonviolence requires both an inward contemplative practice and an outward willingness to resist injustice — that the two are not separate paths but two expressions of the same liberation. Writing from within the Catholic Worker and anti-war resistance movements of the era, he draws on his direct experience as a nonviolent activist to make the case that confronting darkness honestly, without regard for personal consequence, is what ultimately leads to peace.

The book was influential among resisters, prisoners of conscience, and religious activists in the 1970s and remains a touchstone text in Christian nonviolence and peace studies.
