Synopsis

Set in 1917 at Craiglockhart War Hospital, the story follows psychiatrist W.H.R. Rivers as he treats officers suffering from shell shock. Among his patients are the poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, who struggle with the conflict between their duty to their country and their horror at the realities of the trenches. This novel examines the psychological toll of war and the ethical dilemmas faced by those tasked with repairing broken men to send them back to the front.
