Synopsis

Nicky Belane is a broke, hard-drinking Los Angeles private detective with cases that make no sense. A woman calling herself Lady Death hires him to track down the French writer Céline—who has been dead for decades but keeps turning up around town. Another client wants him to find the elusive "Red Sparrow." Somewhere in the mix are aliens, a suspicious wife, cheap bars, and the growing suspicion that Belane's real quarry is his own mortality.

Written in the last years of Bukowski's life and published after his death, Pulp is his only detective novel—a deliberate, affectionate send-up of hard-boiled crime fiction that keeps sliding into the absurd. Dedicated "to bad writing," it wears its pulp trappings lightly while circling darker questions about death, meaning, and the point of it all.

Spare, funny, and stranger than anything else he wrote, Pulp is Charles Bukowski's final novel: a genre parody that doubles as a bleary, deadpan meditation on the end.
