I haven't read Weir's previous work so, I didn't feel compelled to compare this book to his previous ones. I found it an extremely good story that took me across a widely diverging range of emotions which it's one of the things I value the most about reading books. In the beginning, the plot was mildly interesting, but at the 25% mark I went from "it's alright" to "holy fluffing sugar balls this is going to be awesome". I wasn't wrong.
The main character is suffering from some pesky amnesia which is a good plot device to develop a story especially because it creates suspense. But it can become trite if badly done and carries the need for flashbacks. Thankfully Weir did it rather well, and the flashbacks were informative and interesting most of the time. Though, I admit that when it was flashback time, I was always reading those scenes rather quickly so I'd get back to the main story as soon as possible.
