Pretty Baby is one of those thrillers that sneaks up on you. It starts as a story about compassion and doing the right thing, but gradually peels back the layers to reveal something much darker and far more unsettling.
Mary Kubica explores some incredibly heavy themes - trauma, motherhood, mental illness, obsession, and the ways people justify their choices - with a lot of care. None of the characters are simple heroes or villains, and I found myself constantly questioning who I trusted and whether my sympathies were misplaced.
The tension builds steadily rather than relying on constant twists, and I appreciated how character-driven it was. The emotional stakes felt just as important as the mystery, which made the ending hit perfectly.
