Synopsis

At the close of the twelfth century, the German knight Dietmar of Zwingenborg prepares to return home after seven long years fighting in the Holy Land. Grieving and worn down by war, he is drawn into carrying a holy relic back toward Europe, but the journey home becomes a nightmarish odyssey. Alongside companions including the open-minded Razin and the foul-mouthed crusader Tomas, Dietmar crosses lands that grow steadily less familiar, where ancient powers stir and reality itself seems to bend. Drawing on Christian, Arabic and pre-Islamic folklore, the novel uses the collision of faiths around the Crusades to drive a horror that is as much existential as physical. It is a long, dense work that treats the holy war less as a backdrop than as a wound, asking what remains of faith when the world refuses to behave as it is supposed to.
