Pavane
Pavane is a 1968 alternate-history novel by British author Keith Roberts, built from a cycle of linked stories set mostly in Dorset, England. Its premise: Queen Elizabeth I is assassinated in 1588 just as the Spanish Armada approaches. Without a monarch to rally resistance, England falls to Spain, the Catholic Church becomes the dominant political and spiritual power across Europe, and the Reformation never happens.
By the 20th century the Church has deliberately suppressed technological progress to preserve its authority. Society runs on steam-powered road engines and mechanical semaphore telegraphs instead of electricity and combustion engines, and the countryside resembles a 19th-century feudal world rather than the real postwar era. The book is structured as a sequence of "measures" and a closing "coda," echoing the stately courtly dance of the title, following different Dorset families and characters across several generations as quiet signs of rebellion against Church authority begin to surface.
Pavane is a standalone novel, not part of a series. It's widely regarded as one of the genre's most accomplished works of alternate history, prized for its restrained, literary prose and its focus on ordinary lives inside a plausible counterfactual world rather than on the mechanics of the divergence itself.
