Out of My Mind
Melody has a photographic memory and a mind full of brilliant thoughts, but she can't speak, walk, or write. Stuck inside her own body, she's frustrated by her limitations and the low expectations of those around her. When she finally finds a way to communicate, her voice is unleashed, but not everyone is ready to listen to what she has to say.
The story is a work of fiction, though the author drew significant inspiration from her own experiences as a teacher and as the parent of a child with a disability. While the protagonist is not based on a specific real person, the author crafted the narrative to reflect the authentic challenges and emotional realities faced by many individuals with cerebral palsy.
This novel is the first entry in a series that continues with the sequels Out of My Heart and Out of My Dreams.
A feature film adaptation directed by Amber Sealey and starring Phoebe-Rae Taylor was released on Disney+ in 2024.
