Synopsis

Oliver Lewis has lived his whole life on New Sonora, a colony world his grandparents helped found after leaving a dying Earth. It was supposed to be a new beginning, free from the corporations that consumed the old world. It isn't. Earth's mega-corporations have decided the colony's resistance is too good a spectacle to waste, and they've turned it into a premium product: Operation Bounce House. Paying Earthers design their own war machines and pilot them remotely into New Sonora's streets, hunting colonists for entertainment. Oliver and his friends must survive a war they never signed up for, fighting machines piloted by gamers who bought the right to kill them.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Operation Bounce House connected to Dungeon Crawler Carl?

No. It is a completely standalone novel set in its own universe. It shares the author's sensibility — fast pacing, dark humor, human stakes — but has no plot or character connections to DCC.

  • Is this a standalone book?

Yes, completely. No series, no prior reading required.

  • What is the game in the book?

Operation Bounce House is a premium entertainment product sold by Earth corporations — paying customers design remote-controlled war machines and pilot them into a colony world to hunt the colonists. The colonists have no say in the game being played on their home.

  • Is the tone as funny as Dungeon Crawler Carl?

It has Dinniman's dark humor but is more earnest and less satirical than DCC. The stakes are personal rather than cosmic, and the comedy serves the tension rather than leading it.

  • Who are the main characters?

Oliver Lewis, a young man who has lived his entire life on the New Sonora colony, and his sister Lulu. The novel centers on their fight to survive a conflict that the rest of the galaxy watches as entertainment.

  • Is this a good starting point for readers new to Matt Dinniman?

Yes. It's a complete, standalone novel with no prior reading required. DCC readers will feel at home, and new readers get a contained story that showcases Dinniman's strengths without an eight-book commitment.

  • Does the book have a satisfying ending?

Yes — as a standalone novel it resolves completely. No cliffhanger, no sequel setup.
