Synopsis

Natalie is a struggling novelist. She is standing as maid of honor at her best friend Gabby's wedding when she learns, minutes before the ceremony, that the best man wrote the one-star review that gutted her new book. Rob is a linguist who values precision over tact, and his review was aimed at a novel where Natalie had turned Gabby's fiancé into an unflattering fictional stand-in.

Neither expects to see the other again once the reception ends. But Gabby and Angus move fast: a house, then a baby, then one milestone after another. Natalie and Rob keep getting pulled back into the same rooms. Across their late twenties and into their thirties, the two circle each other through housewarmings and christenings, sniping first, then slowly softening.

It is a contemporary romantic comedy built on an enemies-to-lovers, forced-proximity setup. It stays funny and quick moving, but it takes Natalie's insecurities and Rob's rigidity seriously rather than playing them for cheap laughs. The comedy comes from specific, awkward reunions, not from grand gestures.

Underneath the banter is a book about what it costs to fictionalize the people closest to a novelist, and what it takes to actually hear criticism instead of just surviving it. Hankin plays the slow-build romance for laughs without losing the sting of Rob's original review.
