As a parent, this book got under my skin in the best possible way.
One of Our Own is a relatively short read, but I absolutely flew through it. The chapters are short, the pacing is fast, and once I started, I found it incredibly difficult to put down.
What really stood out to me wasn’t just the suspense, but the questions it raises about parenthood. How far would you go to protect your child? Is a mother’s love truly unconditional? And what happens when you’re forced to confront the possibility that your child may be capable of something you never imagined?
As a parent, I found myself constantly thinking about what I would do in the same situation. It’s easy to believe you’d make the “right” choice, but this book does a great job of showing how complicated things become when it’s your own child involved.
Lucinda Berry has a knack for writing stories that feel uncomfortably realistic, and this one had me hooked from beginning to end. It wasn’t just gripping; it was thought-provoking.
The only reason this isn’t quite a 5-star read for me is that I wanted a little more from the ending. Even so, this was an incredibly compelling read that balanced suspense with some genuinely challenging questions about family, loyalty, and unconditional love.
If you’re a parent, prepare to lose sleep - not because it’s scary, but because you’ll keep asking yourself: what would I do if it were my child?
