On capitalism and alienation with a peek to one’s existential unease premise. As Seoul Market is about to be demolished for redevelopment, Eungyo an Mujae; the two young workers in the small electronics shops at the market now experiencing a strange phenomenon where they see people’s shadows start to rise and wander around.
It was too surreal and emotionally affecting. I loved how the ‘rising shadow’ metaphorically depicted those spirit and life force; of anger, fear, anxiety and exhaustion that the characters silently endured. The no quotation prose did not bother me as much and I liked how Eungyo’s POV echoed the pressure and hardships of the working class through the harsh social and economic backdrop. Her scenes with Mujae always felt bizarre and dreamlike— loved the ending though bit ambiguous. 4/5*
