As soon as I saw Gillen had written a comic about Arthurian legend, I knew I had to read it. I didn't even read the blurb, I just got in headfirst. It wasn't the kind of story I expected, but it didn't disappoint.
The narrative takes place in a modern-day England where fantastical literary characters come to life now and then. It's too early to tell, but for now, the characters seem to come from Anglo-Saxon Medieval literature. The Arthurian legend, of course, takes center stage. I don't want to spoil it, so suffice it to say the characters we know and love are a bit... different.
The hero of the story is a young man that has no idea that this fantastical world exists but is soon introduced to all the craziness by drumrolls, please (here comes my favorite character...) his spry and totally badass grandma. The elderly are so rarely one of the main characters in an adventure story that is refreshing to see them being portrayed.
For now, this comic has grabbed my attention, but I hope for a bit more meat in those bones in future volumes; otherwise, this premise is going to get old soon.
