Synopsis

Old Times is a classic Harold Pinter play about the fragility of shared history and the power of what is left unsaid. When Kate's old friend Anna arrives at her and Deeley's home, the three begin recounting a past they have all lived through — but no two of them can agree on what actually happened. Deeley's account of their shared history is quietly undermined by Anna's, and Kate's own version of events is quietly undermined by Deeley's. As the three trade stories, the truth of what happened twenty years ago begins to emerge, and the cost of that truth becomes clear. Pinter's signature ambiguity and tense, ambiguous dialogue make Old Times one of his most haunting and unsettling pieces.

About the author

H
Harold Pinter

Harold Pinter (1930-2008) was an English playwright, screenwriter, director, actor, poet and political activist, widely regarded as one of the most influential British dramatists of the twentieth century. His plays, including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, The Homecoming and Betrayal, are marked by pauses, ambiguity and an undercurrent of menace, a style that entered the language as "Pinteresque." He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005.
