Synopsis

O Crime do Padre Amaro (The Sin of Father Amaro) is Eça de Queiroz's landmark 1875 satire of hypocrisy in the Catholic clergy. Set in Leiria, Portugal, it follows a young priest whose outward piety masks a compulsive double life — an affair with Amélia that leads to her tragic death and his own moral unraveling. A masterpiece of Portuguese Naturalism, the novel uses sharp irony and dark realism to expose corruption within religious institutions.
