Synopsis

In the heart of Rio de Janeiro, a single tenement house becomes a microcosm of a decaying society. As the walls of the crowded building close in, the lives of its diverse inhabitants — Portuguese immigrants, mulatto women, and a desperate underclass — begin to collide and unravel under the pressure of poverty, desire, and the city's feverish atmosphere. Aluísio Azevedo's 1890 masterpiece is a landmark of Brazilian Naturalism, tracing how environment and circumstance slowly strip away the veneer of civilization from those trapped within its walls.
