Synopsis

Eiji Miyake, a nineteen-year-old from the remote island of Yakushima, travels to Tokyo to find the father he has never known. Told in a fragmented first-person narration that blends reality with vivid, media-saturated dream sequences, the novel follows Eiji's search for identity and connection in a city that feels both overwhelming and intimate. Along the way he becomes entangled with a waitress he cannot stop thinking about, a reckless law student, and a landlord who quietly looks out for him. David Mitchell's 2001 novel is a meditation on perception, memory, and the gap between what we see and what we truly understand.
