While the novels and the original radio broadcasts share the same core characters and premise, they are distinct versions of the story that frequently diverge in plot, character arcs, and specific events. Douglas Adams intentionally rewrote and adapted the material for each medium, meaning the radio series contains scenes and subplots that do not appear in the books and vice versa.
The series is intended to be read in the order of publication, starting with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as the narrative builds upon the events and character developments of the preceding installments. Although each book functions as a distinct episode in a larger journey, the overarching plot relies heavily on the continuity established in the earlier volumes.
This omnibus contains the five novels written by Douglas Adams, which he humorously referred to as a trilogy in five parts. It does not include the sixth novel in the series, which was written by Eoin Colfer, or various short stories and radio scripts that exist within the same universe.
