Synopsis

This book explores how wars are fought twice: first on the battlefield, then in memory. Focusing on the Vietnam War (or the American War), it examines how this conflict continues to shape identity in Vietnam, the United States, Laos, Cambodia, and South Korea. Through an analysis of literature, film, monuments, and museums, the author argues that art offers an alternative to nationalism and the cycle of war.

Viet Thanh Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American novelist, essayist and literary scholar. He was born in 1971 in Ban Mê Thuột, South Vietnam (now Buôn Ma Thuột, Vietnam), and came to the United States as a refugee in 1975, when his family fled after the fall of Saigon. They were resettled first at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, and later in San Jose, California, where he became a naturalized US citizen.
