Edward Irving Worti (born on December 23, 1937), better known as Avi, is an American author of young adult and children's literature.
Nothing but the Truth
Philip Malloy, a ninth grader, faces a dilemma when his English grades threaten his spot on the track team. Convinced his teacher dislikes him, he devises a plan to switch classes, leading him to hum during the national anthem. This seemingly small act escalates into a national controversy, forcing everyone to question freedom, patriotism, and respect.
Avi was inspired by a real-life incident in his son's school where a student was suspended for humming during the national anthem, which then escalated into a larger public debate.
The novel is presented entirely through documents, including memos, letters, diary entries, and transcripts of conversations and interviews, offering multiple perspectives on the events.
The book received a Newbery Honor in 1992, recognizing it as a distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
