Jac Brodie left Brook Haven after her father, the town's much-loved chief of police, went off a cliff. The official finding was one thing; what the town said behind its hands was that his daughter was to blame. She has not been back since.

Her grandfather goes into hospital and she returns, which means facing the version of herself this place has been maintaining in her absence.

While she has been away, a wealthy newcomer called Faye Arden has bought Moor Manor, the house nobody wanted, and turned it into a handsome inn. The town has taken to her completely. Jac is convinced there is something badly wrong underneath the charm, and finds herself in the position of being the only person saying so, in a town that already thinks she killed her father.
