This did not grip me the way I thought it would, I was really struggling at some point.
It started out really good, the first chapter was pretty much the perfect introduction to the story.
I also loved the 80s-90s segments of the story; I really liked Vic as a kid and reading about her little adventures.
But then the story slowed down significantly, and that's when Bing - one of the worst, most disgusting characters I've ever read - seemed to become pretty prominent in the story. I can't describe how much I hated that man. I understand he is one of the main antagonists of the story, but those 20-30% of the book in the middle were almost unbearable for me because of Bing.
Honestly, I would've preferred to read about Vic's stay in mental institutions and rehab during that time.
The moment Bing was out of the picture, I was so relieved, I read the last 40% of the book in 24hrs.
Bing aside, there were a lot of horrible adults in this story. Pretty much the only characters I cared about were Vic, Maggie, and Lou. I just wish we'd seen more of Maggie because she was my favorite.
I think the characterization in general lacked a bit of depth though, because I barely cared if any of them would survive.
The last bit of the story was really good, I loved the ending.
I loved catching the several references to King's world too!
