No One Will Miss Her
On an October morning in rural Copper Falls, Maine, the local junkyard is on fire and Lizzie Ouellette — the girl this town has mocked her whole life — is dead. Her husband, Dwayne, is nowhere to be found, and the state police detective assigned to the case, Ian Bird, finds a community more interested in gossip than grief.
The trail does not stay in Copper Falls. Lizzie and Dwayne had been renting out their tiny lake house to Adrienne Richards, a glossy social-media influencer married to a disgraced financier, and Bird's questions carry him hours south to a very different world of money, image and carefully managed appearances. The two women's lives had become entangled across a class divide, in a relationship that was transactional, resentful and far closer than either would admit.
Kat Rosenfield's psychological thriller is narrated in part by Lizzie herself, in a caustic, funny, class-conscious voice that circles the reader steadily toward the truth about what happened at the lake.
