Structured based on a retelling from a series of letters written by Princess Pakize (the 3rd daughter of the 33rd Ottoman sultan) that the narrator gained access to, it follows a journey of the princess and her husband, Doctor Nuri to Mingheria when the island was caught in a plague outbreak with a murder mystery that has killed the Ottoman Empire’s Chief Inspector of Public Health and Sanitation, Bonkowski Pasha.

As I have read Pamuk previously, the descriptive phrases and massive setting were much expected. Love how the actual historical events (post Sino-Jap war and Boxer Rebellion) complementing the inventive worldbuilding— an exotic and atmospheric details of culture to intertwine with interracial conflict (in between Muslims and Orthodox Greeks), political corruptions, abuse of power and bureaucracy, a rebellion and plague anarchy narratives. Slowburn yet so intensely plotted and I mostly love the characterization as well; bold, flawed and grippingly crafted— both the princess and Dr. Nuri, the commander and even Ramiz (he was the rebel head) too was enthralling much to me.

The 3rd POV can be a bit unappealling and less emotionally driven but the epilogue was a scene-stealer to me when it changed back to our narrator’s perspective with post-Mingherian revolution and a more heartwarming story for Princess Pakize and Dr. Nuri. An easy plot to grasp despite the heavy themes; the outbreak and its political madness were relatable much and the other subplots (individual societal role, on religions, literature, health and medicine) too were engrossingly explored. Bit disappointed on the murder mystery part as it did not end that thrilling or even suspense enough to me but overall, it was still a remarkable and exquisite historical fiction, a great catch-up too for me to get a chance of reading Pamuk again. 3.9 stars to this!

Thank you Times Reads for the gifted review copy!",4,"none","rv-01kr82hx92c8z9x8pe8hpy71y9",[],"2026-05-10T04:33:00.000000Z
"https://api.seekquel.app/api/works/01kr82hv3cxc38s02x0gqtmf8n/reviews",20]
