Night of Knives

Night of Knives is Ian C. Esslemont's debut in the Malazan world and the first of his Novels of the Malazan Empire, running parallel to Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. Where that series spans continents, this book narrows its lens to a single night on Malaz Island, the modest place from which the empire first rose.

The story alternates between Temper, a veteran soldier carrying old wounds and secrets, and Kiska, a young islander desperate to escape into a larger life. As a supernatural convergence descends and factions maneuver around the imperial succession, the two are drawn into events that will shape the empire's future. The confined setting and short span make it a comparatively accessible entry point into a famously dense secondary world.

It introduces names and forces that echo throughout the broader Malazan canon, but keeps its focus intimate and its stakes personal.
