Synopsis

In 1936, jazz musician Thomas Greene leaves segregated Baltimore for Shanghai, where he leads a black jazz orchestra and finds unexpected success. Meanwhile, Song Yuhua, bound to a powerful crime boss, secretly spies for the Communist Party. As the Japanese invasion shatters Shanghai, Thomas and Song are drawn together, navigating a world torn between music and war, freedom and commitment, leading to an impossible choice.
