New and Selected Poems, Volume One
New and Selected Poems, Volume One was published by Beacon Press in 1992 and won Mary Oliver the National Book Award.
It puts thirty poems that appear nowhere else beside a selection drawn from her first eight collections, so the reader gets the whole arc at once: the early work, American Primitive, Dream Work, House of Light. Wild Geese is here. So is The Journey.
What the gathering makes obvious is how consistent she was. The subjects hold steady across three decades, the natural world and the plain fact of mortality, and the craft keeps quietly tightening around them.
At 272 pages it is the other obvious entry point to Oliver alongside Devotions, and the one that shows the first half of the career on its own terms rather than through her later selection. A second volume followed in 2005.
